Focus on LIberty
Another Independence Day has arrived and for the 232nd time in our history, we Americans will take a breath from daily life and relish the gift of liberty bestowed upon us by our Creator, and protected by our government. At our inception, words such as "life", "liberty", and the "pursuit of happiness" forged the foundational trinity of a nation of insurmountable blessing. Over two-hundred years later, those words have found residence in the deepest and dearest parts of our being. This, too, is an election year and consequently, the public air is flowing with these same words issued from two men as they strive to gain our trust.
Yet, during this week of Independence especially, a concentration and reminder of the true meaning of our self-evident truths is necessary. Therefore, ponder these words of Frederic Bastiat from his masterpiece "The Law": "God has given to men all that is necessary for them to accomplish their destinies. He has provided a social form as well as a human form. And these social organs of persons are so constituted that they will develop themselves harmoniously in the clean air of liberty." More fundamentally than a right, liberty is ability. We have been endowed by our Creator the ability to exercise our wills to best serve the interest of self, of family, and of property. Liberty is our ability; the exercise thereof is our right. How simple yet profound a thought this is! We, as people, are able. It is an amazing blessing that our government is built on recognition of this truth.
May this be yet another reason to believe that God has indeed blessed America. People have possessed the liberty of ability since the beginning of time and few governments have established themselves upon the belief in this liberty. Enjoy the independence to be able to do so this Independence Day and God Bless America.
