Regents miss opportunity

The various boards of regents that govern Oklahoma’s colleges and universities have approved increases in tuition and fees for the coming academic year. Many regents approve tuition and fee increases whether or not state support increases or decreases.

First, the bad news. The tuition and fee increases averaged 5.3 percent, which will boost the cost of college for students by an average of $284 this year. For those at the flagship universities, that cost will increase by about $450. Because of the entitlement mentality of some higher education officials, students and their families will pay greater college costs.
