Free Market Friday: The roster is set

Scouting is done, the draft is over, and the rosters are set. In sports, nobody at this point would think the season is over. And in politics, with the election behind us, this is right where we are.

Sure, it helps to have a great bench. But what matters for the Thunder is how players perform during the season. A player who thinks the ultimate measure of success is just making the team is confused about what matters most. Sometimes, this is what happens to politicians.

Making the team or winning an election is exciting. It takes a lot of work, skill, and perseverance – and often some luck. But all it does is put a person into a position where he or she can make a difference. Nothing really consequential happens until game day.

In Washington, D.C., and in half the states, including Oklahoma, Republicans will control the executive and legislative branches of government. Republican partisans might think they’ve won, but the real contest comes next. The new Congress meets in January. Oklahoma’s state legislative session begins Feb. 6.
