Toward responsible governance

In a 2004 performance audit of Oklahoma's motor vehicle fleet, state auditor and inspector Jeff McMahan (I know, I know) famously remarked that "the number of passenger vehicles the State owns is unclear."

Indeed, in a new study researchers at the Reason Foundation say most states don't know how much land or property they own. The Reason report outlines ways states can determine what they own and save taxpayers millions of dollars.
